Meetings are held the third Tuesday of each month except for December.
All meetings begin at 7 PM in the Des Moines Botanical Center unless notified
otherwise, with the
exception that the November meeting always begins at 6:30 PM. Members are
encouraged to bring trees to work on or to get help with after the scheduled program.

Meeting - Bonsai soils and pottery - All those who attended
the Michael
Hagedorn Twisted Shimpaku workshop are asked to bring those
trees for show and tell and
discussion concerning their appropriate potting and further
development.
March
15-16: SPRING
WORKSHOP WEEKEND, Sean Smith, the foremost suiseki diaza
maker in America and a leading expert on the display of bonsai and
suiseki, will give a
presentation on display of suiseki and demonstrate the making of a
diaza for the
mounting of suiseki on Saturday morning. On Saturday afternoon
there will be a
workshop on diaza making, with wood and collected suiseki stones
provided. Everyone
leaves with a viewing stone and a fitted diaza. Tools also
provided for participants
without them; limited enrollment. Sunday afternoon bonsai workshop:
enrollment limited.
March

Meeting - Twisted Shimpaku from a whip workshop - For a
nominal cost you
can learn to wire and contort a young Well House shimpaku juniper
into a yamadori (collected
juniper) like shape. Bring tools (and a rabbits foot) if you
have them.

Meeting - Detailed Repotting - Learn the finer points on
repotting: how to shape
roots that are misshapen and position them better, the correct
mounting level when repotting,
etc. Feel free to bring a tree with recalcitrant roots, an
appropriate pot and soil and we will
help you train and repot.

Meeting - Working with Pines - Some basics and some finer
points on working
with this tree whose natural style dominates nearly all bonsai
styling.

our warm climate
loving tropicals.

Meeting - Drawing Bonsai - It has been observed that if you
cannot at least
roughly draw a bonsai you will have difficulty creating it in
three-dimensional form. Advance
your styling/refinement skills at this meeting. Bring paper,
pencil and eraser!
