Iowa Bonsai Association 2007 Calendar
 

January 15:  BONSAI TOOLS.  Bill Todd will lead a discussion of tool selection and
maintenance.  The club membership will also further develop program ideas for the year.

February 20:  POTS AND SOILS.  Larry Totton will lead off a discussion on pots, their
characteristics, and their sources.  Ron Heinan will coordinate a discussion of
appropriate soils for bonsai.

March 4:  AZELIA WORKSHOP AND SEMINAR with Gary Wood, 1 to 4 or 5 pm, Magruder
farm.

March 16-18:  FLOWER, LAWN & GARDEN SHOW, Varied Industries Building, Iowa State
Fairgrounds, Des Moines, Iowa.  Volunteer a few hours to represent the club at our booth.

March 20:  BOTANICAL CENTER BONSAI.  Club members who have “adopted” DMBC
bonsai will discuss current care and future plans for the trees design evolution.

April 17:  COLLECTING FROM THE WILD (or what passes for it in Iowa).  Planning for a
collecting outing. discussion of post-collecting care, good types of trees for collecting,
etc.  All are encouraged to bring a collected tree for illustration and discussion.

April 28-29:  Mike Hagedorn Twisted Shimpaku workshops, Magruder farm.

May 15:  STATE FAIR SHOW TREE PREPARATION.  Time to begin spiffing up your
intended entries.  Alan Magruder will lead off this discussion with comments on
presentation by Ron Heinan and Ivan Hanthorn.

June 19:  TROPICAL TREES.  Repotting demonstration and discussion led by Ron
Heinan.

July 1:  Entry deadline for Iowa State Fair Bonsai Show.

July 17:  Work on CLUB TREES.  Group participation in bringing along the shimpaku
trees that the club utilizes for membership promotions.

August 12:  IOWA STATE FAIR BONSAI SHOW, Agriculture Bldg., Iowa State Fairgrounds,
Des Moines, Iowa.

August 21:  Recap of STATE FAIR experiences.  VIEWING STONES discussion by Mike
D, Ice T, and Ivan E.

September 18:  IS IT BONSAI?  A plant in a pot is not by that alone a bonsai.  Ivan
Hanthorn will lead off a discussion of plant material that is easy/hard to make into bonsai
and criteria for defining bonsai, followed by a discussion by all of tree types that are
easy/hard to care for; those with similar care requirements; and emergency care
approaches.

October 6-7:  ANNUAL FALL SHOW, Reiman Gardens, Ames, Iowa.

October 16:  COLLECTION ORGANIZATION.  Led by Fred Truck.

November 20:  ANNUAL POTLUCK DINNER.  Complete with the ever exciting Dead Tree
Contest, as well as Awards and the election of the Board of Directors.
